SCREAMING TREES: WRONG TURN TO JAHANNAM: (LIVE FROM EGG STUDIO 1991) Live Album cover

Wrong Turn To Jahannam: Live From Egg Studio 1991, is a live album by Screaming Trees, released in November 24, 2023, through Screaming Trees Label, and Legacy Records in Format LP. In early 1991 Screaming Trees were in a shambles. Mark Pickerel had left the band a year earlier and Van was off playing bass for Dinosaur Jr. Mark Lanegan and Gary Lee Conner were set to continue with Donna Dresch on bass and a friend of hers on drums.

Uncle Anesthesia, the Band’s first major label album on Epic Records, had just been released. While it seemed that playing with the new band members might work, Gary Lee was despondent at the prospect of going on without his brother as Van had already quit and come back once in 1988. He came up with a plan. Gary Lee asked his brother if he would return to the Trees if he could get their good friend Dan Peters (on hiatus from Mudhoney) to play drums.

It worked, Van flew home and the band, with the once more reunited brothers, was soon touring for the new Epic album. During this time the Trees went into Conrad Uno’s Egg Studio in Seattle for a rehearsal session. (The band was notorious in Seattle for never having their own rehearsal space and always were asking to borrow one.)

After a couple of days of practice Mark Lanegan had Conrad put a tape on the multitrack to record the live set for posterity. All alone in Conrad Uno’s Seattle basement, Screaming Trees kicked some rock and roll ass.

No audience, no cheering crowd but raw Trees power, nonetheless. Here is that session which sat unheard for over 30 years. It’s a great testament to why Screaming Trees are remembered as one the Northwest’s most exciting and intriguing live bands.
