Soundgarden’s Superunknown #1 album in America (1994)

That’s a classic moment in music history! On March 26, 1994, the Billboard 200 was indeed topped by these two landmark albums:

#1: SoundgardenSuperunknown

#2: Nine Inch Nails: The Downward Spiral

Both records were released on the same day, March 8, 1994, and their immediate chart success marked a massive commercial peak for grunge and industrial rock. Soundgarden’s Superunknown debuted at number one with 310,000 copies sold in its first week, narrowly beating out NIN’s The Downward Spiral, which sold 118,000 to take the runner-up spot. For anyone not in the mood for heavy riffs that week, the Ace of Base album The Sign rounded out the top three.
